A long day, 29 km, winding down from Argegna at 1066 metres into the Garfagnana valley. With a lot of ups and downs along the way! The Via del Volto Santo winds from one mountain village to the next, along ancient stone-paved paths, over humpbacked bridges, past wayside chapels and bell towers built on rocky outcrops. Through the town of Piazza al Serchio, and then the village of San Donnino, where the local shopkeeper offered us a gift of fresh fruit. Through the forest, under castles, fortresses, stone archways and magnificent chestnut trees, along the shore of a lake. And just when we finally seemed to be entering the town of Castelnuovo Garfagnana - the path turns away from the city and into the woods again, winding under a railway bridge, down to the river and through an industrial district to the bottom of a long staircase that took us - right up to the door of our hotel!
