Sentiero Liguria 7: Acquasanta - Cogoleto

Acquasanta - Cogoleto
via Voltri - Arenzano (20 km)

What a beautiful morning: a rainbow without rain! My walk started out in the mist high in the hills above Voltri (the western end of Genova). After descending on dirt tracks to the edge of the city, and passing under the motorway right where it forks (one goes toward France, the other to Alessandria), I came to the sea and stopped for mid-morning snack on the beach.

Descending toward Voltri
The motorway
What the motorway looks like from underneath

And now, 12.5 km along the waterfront... perfectly flat!!!

Different ways of getting across Liguria.
From left to right, lower to higher: railway, pedestrian trail, Via Aurelia, motorway!
Coming out of Voltri there is a pedestrian path which follows the Via Aurelia, originally a Roman road, now a highway. This coastal stretch was not very busy on a Monday morning, so it was no problem walking by the highway. And the path is very well organised, with benches and fountains at regular intervals. Looking back at the city of Genova... getting farther and farther away!

After Arenzano the trail leaves the Via Aurelia and becomes a pedestrian and cycling path on the bed of the old railroad tracks. Taking advantage of old railway tunnels to get from one side of each rocky promotory to the other!

Coming into Cogoleto... the end of today's walk!
