Many people begin the Caminho Português by taking the metro out of the city. But the walk along the river bank to the ocean at Foz de Douro, where I have been staying the past few days, is beautiful! And in the early morning the city is deserted. Non of the usual tourists, but only fishermen and joggers are about.
If you do have to take public transport out of the city, for whatever reason, I would recommend taking double-decker bus number 500 from Praça de Liberdade, which travels the route you would have walked. That is what we will be doing today, to save ourselves from having to walk 30 km on our very first day. And so yesterday I warmed up with a mini-hike from the Cathedral out to Foz de Douro and up the coast to Matosinhos, 12 km.

Where the river meets the ocean you will find these vintage public toilets - worth spending a penny just to see the art deco tiling! |
