The day began with a steep climb to get back onto the Caminho from our accommodations in Anha, followed by a descent into a new suburb (Cidade Nova) and across a veeeery long bridge into Viana do Castelo.
We followed the waterfront along the river to the ocean, where we once again found ourselves in thick fog. For the rest of the day our path hugged the seashore, over boardwalks at times, but sometimes amid the sand dunes. Walking in the sand took a lot of time and energy, so for the last part of the day we switched to a cobblestone street parallel to the sea - equally tough on the feet!
Just when we thought we must be almost there, we found we had one more beach to cross - on a broken and sanded-over boardwalk leading to yet another bridge.
Finally our destination was in sight - Vila Praia de Âncora and Guesthouse Avenida. Our accommodations here are simple but sufficient, and the restaurant next door has an excellent pilgrim menu of soup, fish, rice and salad - all for €7.50! And it comes with a glass of wine, too!
