GR653A Day 14: Brignoles - Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume

Another day of vineyards in splendid autumn colours!

With a lunch break in the main square of the small town of Tourves.

We invented today's route ourselves, with the help of Google Maps, as we are still in that stretch of the trail where the route has changed and the new route is not yet properly marked out. We figured out how to get from A to B crossing over the Canal de Provence and then walking along a quiet country road among - guess what? Vineyards!

This evening we dined on crêpes made by our host in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume. A beautiful town that is a pilgrimage site in itself. According to the legend, St. Mary Magdalene escaped persecution in the Holy Land and came to St. Baume to live in a cave for 30 years before she died here in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume. Her skull is on display in a reliquary in the crypt of the Basilica - the biggest Gothic building in southeast France. Imposing in size but unfinished on the outside, the church is truly beautiful within.

Bonne nuit!
