Another day of fantastic scenery! A day on the Massif Estérel, a promontory of red rock covered with Mediterranean maquis which looks very similar to Liguria, covered with pine trees, "strawberry trees" (corbezzoli), oak and cork trees.
Hot and tiring walking! We rather underestimated how long it would take us to get from Villa Saint Camille to Agay, and anticipated being there by early afternoon; we looked forward to spending the rest of the day relaxing on the beach! But after climbing steeply up to Col Notre Dame at 323 metres, we found we did not descend gradually back to sea level as we had expected; we wound round and round, heading far inland on rough, rocky ground in full sunshine. Water - to swim in or to even to drink - became a distant memory and a fading hope. All the stream beds we crossed were so dry we could walk along them and use them as trails. The coast disappeared from view entirely as the day grew longer and longer, hotter and hotter. We encountered numerous hikers and cyclists, even on a Tuesday in October! One of the cyclists stopped to talk: he told us he was the man who had painted the trail markings. He had walked from Canterbury to Rome, from who-knows-where in France to Santiago, and one month from now, he will be setting off from southern Spain to walk through Portugal and once again to Santiago - in short, he made us feel as if what we were doing was just a short Sunday stroll!
Théoule-sur-Mer - Agay 20 km
Today we completed our walk through Département 06 Côte d'Azur and entered Département 83 Var!
Total so far: 170 km
